It's that time of year when the leaves turn and that burned dust smell f rom freshly fired furnaces — and with it comes a rise in chimney fires. Ch imney fires can burn explosively. The first indication of a chimney fire i s usually the noise — a roaring sound that grows louder as the fire intensi fies, reaching temperatures of up to 2,000 F. Ensure the occupancy is full y evacuated. And because all fires are unpredictable, firefighters must wea r full PPE, including SCBA.
CONTACT:Phil X-EXTRAINFO:Please bring full structure PPEUse the proper ladders when it is required t o access the roof.Access the chimney area and remove the chimney cap, bird screens or spark arrestors.Visually inspect the chimney with a mirror to de termine the extent of the fire. Be cognizant of the dead load you are addi ng to a roof structure, especially if there has been a significant amount o f snow loading the roof support recently.Chimney fires rarely occur when th e weather is good, so watch your footing in snow or freezing-rain condition s.
