Descriptive Fire Danger is based on two outputs from the WFAS model: Staffing Level (SL) and Ignition Component (IC). Every evening, WFAS publishes a file containing data from all reporting observation stations in the state. RCVFD bases its Fire Danger off of the observations of the following official observation stations:
The calculation of Staffing Level is driven by the individual recording station, but all three of the stations above drive it off of Energy Release Component (ERC), another WFAS model output. We calculate our Average Fire Danger by averaging the SL and IC of each of those stations, and then using them as lookups into the two-dimensional mapping dictated by WFAS:
Avg SL | Adjective Fire Danger Rating | ||||
1 – 1.5 | L | L | L | M | M |
1.5 – 2.5 | L | M | M | M | H |
2.5 – 3.5 | M | M | H | H | VH |
3.5 – 4.5 | M | H | VH | VH | E |
4.5 – 5 | H | VH | VH | E | E |
Avg IC: | 0 – 20 | 21 – 45 | 46 – 65 | 66 – 80 | 81 – 100 |
