Mountain Lion Attacks Lower Buckhorn

On Tuesday evening 11/7 we lost 2 of our goats to a couple of mountain lions. One we believe was lost and confused in the thick fog that day and was attacked on our south facing mountainside. The other goat was 12 feet from our east facing deck well within our perimeter fencing. Our dog alerted from inside. Turning on the east side light I immediately saw large lion prints and a clear drag mark that ran down the east side to the south side of the house until the lion could not get its kill outside the fencing. It was to dark even with outside lighting to safely follow the mountain lion tracks and drag mark that was approximately 80-100 yards long. Wednesday morning upon inspection I found one dead goat inside our fenced area at the end of the drag mark with clear lion tracks. Other than the kill of this goat there was no sign the lion attempted to eat it. I believe the lion abandoned its kill when I turned on the outside lights. We stumbled upon the second goat with the lion guarding it. We were approximately 20 feet from the lion before it growled and turned away. Yesterday 11/11 2 more goats were picked off by the lion(s). We are aware of the obvious, we moved into predator territory and goats if you've ever had the experience are hard to contain in any sort of fencing. Despite all off this, the lion has killed 6 times on our property within the last 8 months! And, 3 of those 5 kills were well within our perimeter fencing close to the house. This mountain lion or lions are clearly comfortable walking up close to the house! Be alert! Be safe! Be aware!

Fire extinguisher recall

Terry Shetler just brought the Kidde fire extinguisher recall to my attention. He had 4 recalled and it turns out 5 out of 6 extinguishers in my house are on the recall list.

This is the Kidde link for the fire extinguisher recall:
They are offering free replacement for all affected units back to 1973. Four of the seven extinguishers we have are affected.

Jon Stephens is planning to exhibit a recalled extinguisher with the recall notice in the Winter Festival tent.

Missing Steers / Book Sorting

Please be so kind to send out an update to the RCVFD community about our missing steers? We are still missing 11 head – 10 blacks and 1 red who has a white ear tag. Picture attached of some of the blacks with blue ear tags. At this point some have been found as far down the Buckhorn as mile marker 26.

Any sightings or suspicions please call #970-881-2147.
Thank you!

The Book Bees are done sorting for the year so Please do not leave books at the festival for us to sort. Last year we spent most of Saturday sorting. There are those of us who have to go home to make pies, etc so keep this in mind. If you have books to donate, please leave them in the box at fire house 1. We will sore them for next year.
Thank you.

Bear Confrontation

Thought that you might let the community know that a large black bear broke into my house early saturday morning. He did a full circle around my house and outbuildings, tearing off screens and leaving paw prints on every window before pushing one in and knocking over a pantry of dry goods.
He left food on the floor uneaten and believe that our car pulling in ran him off.

See Photo at

He confronted me this morning while I was walking my dog, and stood up sizing me up before I moved within a hundred yards of him and he slowly turned and retreated.
He investigated all of my outbuildings, most which have never had food products in.
My place is just west of the Buckhorn Cell towers.

Missing herd of steers

My name is Amy Williams. My husband, Todd, and I ranch in the Pingree Park area and we graze cattle in the upper Buckhorn/Monument Gulch area part of the summer. I spoke with Dick Vannorsdel this morning and he suggested that I contact you to see if you could please help us spread the word through your community alert.

We are missing our herd of steers that were grazing on the Dickerson homestead along USFS road 135 and 44-H. Sometime on Tuesday, July 18th it appears that the herd was chased through four-strand barbed wire fence by something. The herd might have been split up at the time so we don’t know if they are all together now or in two groups. With the heavy rains on Wednesday we have little to go on in the tracking department though we believe that some headed towards Greer Road and that is where the tracking ends due to heavy rains washing out sign.

We are in need of eyes to be on the lookout for them and appreciate any leads. All are branded and most are ear tagged with yellow, blue or white tags. Two blacks have horns. There are 23 steers missing. 19 blacks, 4 reds. Unsure what direction they may be heading. Any sightings or sign of tracks/manure please contact us at 970-881-2147 or email at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
